Anyone can apply for a card if you have proof of residence in Burke County (proof of residence can be a photographic id with the correct address OR an older photographic id with some other form of proof for current address – checks, bills, mail, etc.). Individuals under the age of 15 must have parental consent and are registered as a juvenile.
We have three locations in Burke County: Morganton, Valdese, and Hildebran. Addresses, maps, and hours for each site can be found on our Library Directions and Hours page.
All three of our libraries offer printing, faxing, and copying. Printing can be done from our public computers (free to use), or you can email the library your file to print. More details on this service can be found at our circulation desks.

The Burke County Public Library has three eMedia collections through Overdrive. NC Kids Digital is curated for 4th grade and under, NC Kids Level Up! is curated for students 4th-8th grade, and e-iNC is for all ages and includes the newest releases and eMagazines. Information at bcpls.org/ebooks. Download ebooks and audiobooks to your computer, cell phone, iPod, or eBook reader (including Kindle, Kobo, or Nook). The collections continue to grow each year. NC LIVE is a cooperative library service for the students, faculty, business people, and residents of North Carolina. The website allows access to digital content such as ebooks, ejournals, streaming video, and downloadable audiobooks offered from a variety of vendors. This service is provided “free” to all public library users in the state of North Carolina. You just need your library card number, password/PIN, and internet access to get started! Library programs happen at all three locations and are listed on our website and our monthly calendar, as well as advertised in the library, the News Herald, and in different locations around the county. Some programs require pre-registration, which will be stated. Programs are free, unless otherwise noted. Library programs that require registration are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. Please call or visit the library in which the program will take place to sign up for it. Most adult and children’s programs can only be signed up for in person, but information is noted on the calendars and individual program fliers. YA Programs can often be registered for via the email listed on the flier.
